One of the translations of Ishvara Pranidhana, the last Niyama we'll be discussing before we move on to other Sutras, is 'dedication to the the supreme being'. For me, this is the most important observance for the spirit. This is because, in my opinion, the spirit in a man determines all the rest. The psychological, emotional, and physical experience is through our spirit. My spirit is how I am connected to God, my creator and counselor. This concept in yoga can be applied to any faith or belief system, mine is Christianity.
While all the Yamas and Niyamas are great life philosophies, and will lead to your good and other's benefit, I believe this one (and Patanjali said this as well) is key to not needing to white knuckle the other observances. If I'm am surrendering to God's voice, direction, counsel, and character then I will move in the direction of what is good for me and others. Please hear me, I'm not saying you don't need to do things that are good for you, or for others, but checking your motivation and connection to source changes all of your behavior once you are connected and surrendered.
