Last week we talked about the Asana practice in the eight limbs. In that Asana practice we use our breath as the number one tool to connect with our body, release the tension and discomfort of the experience, and gain insight. We then, take this wisdom off our mat (that is one of the most vital parts to living an integrated life, taking your yoga off your mat!
Your breath and muscular energy are a powerful combination in your practice. In our yoga teacher training we emphasize this power as it aids us in increasing our threshold for what we tolerate as "uncomfortable". I got a compliment from my husband the other day. He said, "You are really good at fear management, that is how you've accomplished so much!". After crying, I agreed. And in that moment, I felt so grateful for knowing and practicing yoga concepts. I know fear management because I know breath management. This means anyone can do it...I'm not special! Don't worry, I'm not putting myself down. I'm just saying you can do it too!
This is why poses leave space and have prescribed ways (suggestions, not rules) on when and where to place your breath in the poses. Our newsletter with info on this practice in yoga, Pranayama, goes out on Friday so head to the home page, scroll to the bottom and add your email.
